Palmyra rests 7 miles west of the Mississippi
River on a natural rock foundation in Missouri's Lincoln Hills region. This is a
place where bald eagles soar overhead and the beautiful flowers scattered
throughout have given rise to an annual Flower City Festival full of music,
crafts and games.

Known as "Two Rivers Country" before it was
organized into a county, Marion County was officially created and named in 1826.
The name was given in honor of General Francis Marion, who served during the
American Revolutionary War.
Palmyra has been called "The Handsomest City in Missouri" thanks to its
collection of over 200 lovely antebellum structures. Among these homes are the
1869 Italianate Darwell House, the childhood home of Jane Darwell, who won an
Academy Award for her role in "The Grapes of Wrath," and the 1855 P.J. Sowers Home, which was once the residence of William Russell, one of the founders of
the Pony Express. Those with an interest in history can tour these and other
homes throughout town.

3 public schools and one private school offer education to students of all levels from pre-school up through the end of 12th grade. Higher education is provided by 4 institutions within 80 miles of town. These include the University of Missouri-Columbia, Columbia College, Western Illinois University and Truman State University.
Hannibal Regional Hospital serves the area's health care needs from 7 miles
outside of town.
